Project description
ESSAY QUESTION…..
Kant states that testing our maxims for their universalizability is a purely rational
standard that we must employ in deciding whether a maxim we will is able to serve as a universal moral law.

1) What is the universalizability test and how does it work? That is, explain what
the procedure is for determining if a maxim can serve as a moral law, and what
Kant thinks prevents a maxim from becoming a universal law of morality?

2) Take Kant’s example of issuing false promises to escape embarrassment
(example 2 and at GM, pp. 31) and subject the maxim to the test of
universalizability. Why does Kant think that the maxim is morally impermissible
and ultimately fails the test of universalizability? Explain your answer in detail as
to why it fails.

3) Why does Kant think that a maxim such as, “Do not lie in order to get what
you want” passes his universalizability test? In what important way is it different
than the maxim to issue false promises to avoid embarrassment?

4) Do you think that Kant’s test of universalizability is a good procedure to
discover moral laws, or do you think there is a problem with the test? Provide
your reasons for why you believe as you do.
