Quotes Assignments
The goals:
Help collect information and data from each source
Have information prepared and ready to be used for the paper/writing project
Learn/Know how to do Chicago Manual of Style citations
Know what is relevant and useful for your paper
Identify what is useful and key to the issue
Evaluate information
Develop a strategy for your writing based on facts/information derived from your required and primary sources
Do you need to use all quotes? Can you use more quotes?
No, you might need a few less quotes or a few more quotes.
Some quotes you will use as a paraphrase.
Some quotes might not be useful, as you develop your writing process you might find the need to develop a new idea and you will need quotes to support that section of the writing process that you did not anticipate. Preference for neutral language…I, My, Mine…etc must be avoided.
Minimum requirement for the quotes assignment:
Law quotes: 10 quotes from the federal law (remember you need a law not a bill)
Peer review journal article: 5 quotes from the academic journal article
CQ Researcher article: 5 quotes from the article
CQ Researcher article or the CRS report: 5 quotes from the article or the report
How to …
Setup the assignment:
Have the bibliographic information about the source.
Then provide 2-3 sentences about the source.
Use footnotes
Finally, type the quotes

Move to the next source…
This brief example is fine but not perfect—this source contains mistakes. Can you identify the few mistakes?
Food and Nutrition Act of 2008. As Amended through Public Law 113-128. Sec. 2013-2015. U.S. House of Representatives.
The Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 is my main work of study. I am paying particular attention to section 4 and 5, where the establishment of the SNAP program is explained, and the limitations thereof.
Quotes:
“…eligible households within the State shall be provided an opportunity to obtain a more nutritious diet through the issuance to them of an allotment…”
Food and Nutrition Act of 2008. As Amended through Public Law 113-128. Sec. 2013-2015. U.S. House of Representatives.
“The benefits so received by such households shall be used only to purchase food from retail food stores which have been approved for participation in the supplemental nutrition assistance program.”
Food and Nutrition Act of 2008.
“In the event of distribution on all or part of an Indian reservation, the appropriate agency of the State government in the area involved shall be responsible for the distribution.”
Food and Nutrition Act of 2008.
“The Secretary is authorized to pay such amounts…as the Secretary finds necessary for effective administration of such distribution by a State agency or tribal organization.”
Food and Nutrition Act of 2008.
“The Secretary shall establish a fund for use in purchasing traditional and locally-grown foods…”
Food and Nutrition Act of 2008
“Where practicable…at least 50 percent shall be produced by Native American farmers, ranchers, and producers.”

This is the first of two of my CQ Researcher Articles. It deals with obesity, and how not having a nutritious diet can be a factor in American obesity today.
Quotes:

“Prominent among those factors are low consumption of fruits and vegetables and America’s “obesogenic” environment, which promotes increased portion size, non-healthful foods and physical inactivity.”
Clemmitt, Marcia, and Peter Katel. “Preventing Obesity.” CQ Researcher 20, no. 34 (October 1, 2010): 799-820.
“While diet programs emphasize personal responsibility, public-health experts blame a multitude of factors — many beyond individuals’ control — for the societywide epidemic.”
Clemmit and Katel.
“The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reports that health care spending for all adults increased substantially over the last two decades, but that the growth rate was far faster among the obese.”
Clemmit and Katel.
This bibliography is good, but it is not perfect.

THESIS
A thesis statement is strongly encouraged to be present in this assignment. Example of a nice thesis:
Federal Law: Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004
Thesis: Although the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) was successful in requiring and regulating the labeling of consumer products, for the further safety of the general public, any restaurant that holds a food handler’s permit should be required by law to list the allergen information as outlined in the FALCPA.
