Please answer all of the following questions in full sentences. Please number each response to correspond to the question you are answering.

QUESTIONS TO ANSWER:

1. There were important differences discussed between the Juvenile and Criminal Justice systems. Think about the young women in the film Prison State: Demetria Duncan and Christel Tribble. Both of them were arraigned in the Juvenile (Family) Court. In what ways did their experience demonstrate the rationale and sentencing goals of Juvenile Court? Did you see any evidence that their treatment was more like Criminal Court?

2. Consider the different rationales for punishment: retribution, deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabilitation. Using examples from the film Prison State, explain which rationale for punishment seemed most effective for each of the four people who are featured in the documentary. Be sure that your answer includes a clear explanation of each rationale from course materials.

3. Using both the Lahey and Lyons articles, explain at least three reasons that youth advocates argue in favor of raising the age at which juveniles can be charged as adults. Then explain at least three reasons that victims’ rights advocates argue in favor of charging juveniles of any age as adults.

Corrections

Choose a topic regarding Case Law that is specific to Corrections. This is not a policing or courts class, choose a topic specific to corrections, research the topic, and write an analysis regarding the impact the Courts decision had on Corrections as a whole as well as how the decision impacted both the inmate and staff populations. This written paper was assigned to make you think past the simplistic public view and think critically on the subject. For example: what had to occur before the courts would get involved, what had to happen to force change and what does the change mean for the corrections community and the public. Tie into your paper the information, theories, models, and philosophies that have been discussed in class. Five sources of research are required, but the more sources you use the better. Probably the easiest way to structure this paper is to find an article regarding a corrections related topic (case law), find the original case and build from there. Example topics: case law regarding the use of the 4th amendment in a corrections setting, the conflict regarding each states choice in the methodology of the death penalty, the 8th amendment and the conditions within the prison system or the use of force, or case law surrounding litigation that originated from a prison riot
