Discuss the various elements of the mise-en-scène of our chapter two film, Do The Right Thing, using the questions below as a guide.? Mise-en-scène is an important element of film that can lend authenticity of time and place, convey concrete and symbolic information about characters and events, and even help create specific sensations for the audience.

?In Do The Right Thing the [supposed] ethnicity of the actors/characters, the costumes, the setting in a predominantly African-American neighborhood in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, the colors and lighting of the sets, the relative positions and proximity of the characters in the scene (blocking) and the use of particular props all convey messages to the viewers. What is communicated through the various elements of mise-en-scène in Do The Right Thing? Analyze what is told through the visual composition of actors, costumes, sets, props, lighting and blocking.

??Some examples that can be discussed:
1. The film employs a warm color palette of reds, oranges and yellows. Which sensations do those colors evoke and why? ??Racial tensions are symbolized by the close proximity of characters in many scenes in which heated conversations take place and by the crowded elements of both the interior scenes (such as in Tina’s apartment) and the exterior scenes in the neighborhood sets. Certain props also highlight the individual personal boundaries and the territorial conflicts such as Sal’s white Cadillac and the Korean store.??

2. The Mookie character, played by director Spike Lee himself, wears a Jackie Robinson Brooklyn Dodgers jersey. What is symbolically important about that jersey?

4. Consider all the elements of the mise-en-scène: The set of the street and the brownstone building, the actors involved, the costumes of the characters including Clifton’s Boston Celtics t-shirt and Buggin’ Out’s shoes, and the props such as the bike. What is the importance of these elements and why? What messages do the objects convey?
Write in complete sentences. Spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, etc., all count. Italicize film titles. Organize your thoughts around a clear thesis statement. This is a formal, academic discussion so write accordingly: Avoid informal language, contractions and the use of personal pronouns (I, you, we). Do NOT say, “I think….” Cite specific elements of particular scenes (such as the use of color, lighting, props, costumes, etc.) to support your ideas.
