The historical in Italian fiction and film

The historical in Italian fiction and film

Paper instructions:
we need to compare a novel called “The Leopard” by Tomasi di Lampedusa with the film which is “The Leopard”(1963) by Luchino Visconti. And also compare other novel called “The Comformist” by Alberto Moravia with a film which is “The Comformist”(1970) by Bernardo Bertolucci. The essay prompt is: Narrative and spectacle are the two principal means by which cinema can transform historical novels into historical pictures. Focusing on at least two of the three adaptations you have watched discuss how they integrate narrative interventions (i.e. complex editing, multiple point of views, character development, additions to, or dramatic modifications of the story narrated in the book, etc), and spectacular means (i.e. mise-en-scene, period costumes, operatic aesthetics, dialogue and acting, particular lighting, sound, and music, etc) to produce their historical meaning.
