Psyc 203/Life Span Development/Spring 2016/Journal Article Critique
The written journal article review should critically analyze a (mutually agreed upon) research article from within a developmental theoretical perspective. Explain how the research represents an application of the theory and why it is an important question within the context of the theory. Critique the article on either theoretical or practical grounds. Each review paper should be a minimum of 4-6 pages (double spaced) in length. Please include a copy of the journal article with your paper.
Guidelines for Journal Article Critique
I. Brief Summary of Study 10 points
– integrate how you plan to relate to specific developmental theory/theories
II. Critique of Rationale for Study and Research Questions 20 points
– consider the justification given for the research
– consider whether the research questions are adequate
– consider the theoretical or developmental framework of the study
III. Critique of Sample, Methodology, & Design 20 points
– consider whether the sample, methods, &design were adequate to answer the research questions
– consider how the methods used allowed for developmental considerations
IV. Critique of Results and Implications 40 points
– consider how well the author(s) integrate the results with developmental theory and/or previous literature
– consider the cross-cultural applications of the results
– summarize how the results have implications for generalization, developmental theory, and developmental practice
V. Overview and Personal Thoughts 10 points
– detail your conclusions
– consider what you learned from this research in terms of child development or developmental theory
