Format 3-5 Pages. Double-spaced Times New Roman 12 point font, all pages numbered at bottom center (after 1st page). Not meeting the page count results in an overall ‘minus’ grade on the paper. Single-spaced header with name, date, title of paper in upper left corner Thesis Paragraph: Thesis must clearly state an answer to your question. Introduces major themes and arguments in the paper (answers your question). Must name text, author, and publishing date. Body Paragraphs: Give examples from the text to support thesis, which is sustained throughout the paragraphs. Each body paragraph must have at least one quote. Quotes longer than three lines must be blocked (indented and single spaced). Quotes set up with context, and introduced by a dependent clause (lead into with a comma or colon). Conclusion Paragraph: Does not restate thesis and arguments. Instead, makes a creative connection between the paper’s thesis and something outside of the book. 1st person is OK. Try to not write about the Holocaust. Writing Style/Format: Paper represents your best writing. Spell and grammar checked, correct word usage, no use of 1st or 2nd person, paragraphs of appropriate length, tenses agree. Essay Prompt 2: It has been argued that Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is a harshly realistic novel, in which the two main characters are removed from their homes, forced to work in a coal mine and to carry buckets of excrement up and down a mountain, and continuously humiliated. However, the story also has a fairy-tale quality—the boys initiate new relationships and exercise new freedoms. Explore the ways in which the novel is like a fairy-tale, then argue whether this contributes to our understandings of the atrocities that were committed during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, or detracts from them. Remember: you are not arguing that the novel has fairy-tale like elements–that is understood.
