Assignment brief
Unit number and title Unit 3: Organisations and Behaviour
Qualification Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Business
Start date 14/12/2015
Deadline/Hand-in date 28/03/2016
Assessor

Assignment title Organisations and Behaviour
Purpose of this assignment
The aim of this assignment is to give learners an understanding of individual and group behaviour in organisations, to examine current theories and their application in managing behaviour in the workplace. It focuses on the behaviour of individuals and groups within organisations. It explores the links between the structure and culture of organisations and how these interact and influence the behaviour of the workforce.
Scenario

You have just registered as a business advisor for one of the government programmes to help small businesses grow through the use of subsidised business advice. You will deliver support to small businesses in England, focussing on small businesses who have never sought business advice before.

Your first client is a small training company with a multicultural staff with low motivation and a management team who lack of knowledge and experience in terms of management and leadership, specifically in managing behaviour in the workplace. It is fundamental for you to make them understand the concept of individual and group behaviour in organisations in order to achieve short and long-term goals.

Produce a report to help them understand the nature of an organisational structure, its culture, leadership and management and to identify their role in the success of the business.
Task 1 (LO1: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3)

1.1 -1.2 The first part of your report should compare and contrast the different organisational structures and culture of organisations, explaining (using examples) how the relationship between the organisations’ structure and culture can impact on the performance of the business and the implications of these findings in their company.

1.3 After careful consideration of these organisational cultures and structures you are now to identify internal as well as external factors that could affect employee behaviour. Discuss what you consider could be the main factors which could influence individual behaviour in this small business.
Task 2 (LO2: 2.1, 2.2, 2.3)

In the second part of your report select few companies with different leadership style. Use clear examples to compare the effectiveness of different leadership styles. You should explain how organisational theory underpins the practice of management and evaluate the different approaches to management used by these companies. Explain the implications of these findings for the management of your client.

Task 3 (LO3: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3)

Based on the previous examples you used above, discuss the impact that these different leadership styles may have on staff motivation in case they have to undergo periods of change.
Give a clear explanation of the different motivational theories that can be used and compare their application within the workplace; evaluate their usefulness for managers and explain why you would recommend them.

Task 4 (LO4: 4.1, 4.2, 4.3)

Finish your report by explaining the nature of groups and group behaviour within organisations to make the management team aware of this particular situation. Discuss factors that may promote or inhibit the development of effective teamwork in organisations and show different examples to evaluate the impact that technology has on team functioning within an organisation.
