Language and Literacy

1) In “Fun Home” by Alison Bechdel (955-967), what strategies does the author use in the text and graphics to guide readers through her narrative and help them relate to her struggle to understand her identity. How effective are these strategies in helping readers to follow her story? Also read Chapter 31, “Guiding Your Reader,” on pages 312-317. Write a paragraph of at least five sentences. Begin with an assertive and specific topic sentence. Include at least one quotation, with signal phrase and MLA in-text citation. Use the page number only for the citation.

2) According to Nicholas Carr in “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” (731-744), what has been the effect of the Internet on how we read, think, and live? What evidence does he offer to support his claims? What is your view? Also read Chapter 33, Arguing, on pages 323-335. Write a paragraph of at least five sentences. Begin with an assertive and specific topic sentence. Include at least one quotation, with signal phrase and MLA in-text citation.

***I will upload pages 323-335 tomorrow.

Example

–A signal phrase introduces the quotation: two examples of simple signal phrases would be he writes or she says. Any phrase can be used; the signal phrase simply signals how a quotation or paraphrase is integrated or included.

–The citation would look like this: (Carr 731) if the signal phrase does not include the author’s name.

–The citation would look like this: (731) if the signal phrase contains the author’s last name.
