This unit is dedicated to the following
Examine the fostering of rapport with the listener.
What do we mean by rapport? In sum, this week’s focus concentrates on what it means to create a bond, connection, or affinity with your audience. It does not make any difference how much you know as a communicator of the Gospel. If you do not connect with your audience, your knowledge is for naught. You have a moral obligation to build a relationship, to the extent possible, with those who will listen to you.

UNIT TWO OUTCOMES Upon completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Identify those characteristics to pursue when attempting to create rapport.
2. Examine those characteristics to avoid when attempting to create rapport.
3. Illustrate how one will create rapport with various demographics.
4. Create an action plan for creating rapport with your audience.

INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
This assignment is intended to give you the student exposure to a range of thought, from our course text, regarding those characteristics that help create rapport with the audience. This assignment aligns with the course in that rapport is needed if one is to effectively communicate the Gospel to one’s audience.

Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:

BACKGROUND INFORMATION Our course text lists several chapters dedicated to, on one way or another, creating rapport with your listener. These chapters cover a number of issues, including:
• Preaching to everyone in particular
• The view from the pew
• Connecting hearers through dialogue
• How to be heard
• Connecting with post-moderns
• Connecting with non-Christians
• Interesting preaching

In the media clip entitled “Public Speaking,” the speaker engages the audience, modeling what it means to create rapport. Mind you, his delivery is not a sermon, but rather a brief teaching segment that could apply broadly to most any kind of communication. That said, both his content, and what he models for the viewer, could apply regarding creating rapport with one’s audience, whatever the setting.

The media clip “Worst Preacher Ever” is an extreme example of how not to create rapport with one’s audience. In fact, some of you may find it offensive. One wonders what was going through the minds of the speaker’s audience.

1. Read the following chapters in the course textbook – chapters 29, 31, 34, 36, 43, 45 and 104.
2. View the brief Media Clip: Public Speaking: Seven Insights: Words Which Build or Scar.
3. View the Media Clip: Worst Preacher Ever.

2.4 UNIT ASSIGNMENT: DEMOGRAPHIC REVIEW OF RAPPORT EXERCISE
INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
This assignment is intended to foster thought about how to create rapport across a broad audience range. It aligns with the course in that any communicator of the Gospel will encounter an audience rich in diversity, including- ethnicity, socio-economic background, education level, job skill set, worldview, etc.

Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:
? Illustrate how one will create rapport with various demographics.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Again, we look to Paul:
19 Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.
20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law.
21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law.
22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.
23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

Here, we will examine a few thoughts:
• While Paul expresses his autonomy (I…belong to no man), he says that he makes himself a slave (doulos- one who makes oneself the willful slave of others) to everyone.
• Why does he do this? So he can win as many as possible. “Win” here is the Greek word Kerdaino, meaning to escape from evil and gain one to Christ.
• Paul wants to become (Ginomai- to begin to be) like the Jew, like those under the law, like those not having the law, like the weak, etc.
• He ends this passage by saying he wants to become everything (pas- all, or everything) to everyone in every way to win some.

In your ministry as a communicator of the Gospel, you will no doubt encounter a broad range of people, many of whom desperately need Christ, whether they know it or not. In fact, some will be openly hostile to biblical Christians, and/or the message of the Gospel.

Consider the following demographics:
• The atheist, agnostic or “none”
• The gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender person
• The white collar, affluent business person
• The blue collar, manual labor person
• The single mother
• A couple who are childless by choice
• The elderly person
• The grieving widow or widower
• The single young twenty something
• The African-American
• The Caucasian
• The Latino
• The Asian
• The intellectual
• The person with limited cognitive skills

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Choose any 6 subgroups listed above, or feel free to create your own six that may have been overlooked in the above list.
2. In a Word document, provide a minimum of 75 words for each subgroup, relate how you plan to create rapport with the six you have chosen.
3. Submit in Word document.
