Assignment: Outside the Frame. The focus of the writing for this section is not photography purely or alone, but rather the interaction between text and image in photographic work. Weekly in class assignments examine this intersection, with an eye to how different forms of text, beyond merely reflecting on the photographic image, respond to or supplement it. We will thus also be asking about the necessity of photographic writing to photographic practice what lack in the image words may make up for, what excess of meaning they may sop up, and what their own unique contributions to photographic meaning may be. Over the course of the section, students accumulate their own selection of images which they will combine with text for the final assignment of the section: a photobook of their own, with at least 5 pages of original writing, which will make use of these reflections on form, image, and text.
