The aim of this take-home examination is to assess your critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as demonstrate your understanding of the course materials. You are asked to put forward an informed and convincing sociological argument in response to each question. Please ensure that you submit your take-home examination for an Originality Report.
Your task is: to answer three questions (out of a choice of 5 questions) in a sociological manner, using 700 words per question.
Essay should have structure.

ability to apply sociological perspectives and ideas to the questions
understanding of the processes articulated in the chosen sociological perspectives
the application of social stratification concepts
use of your own words and not direct quotes
in-text referencing to support your claims and a reference list for each question
Questions
1. Stanley Cohen (1972) argues that a moral panic arises when a condition, episode or group are perceived to be a threat to society (Cummings & Rothengatter 2016, p. 36). Critically discuss the notion of a moral panic in relation to one of the following topics: youth and the ice epidemic OR teenage mothers OR fundamentalist Islam.2. In what ways have attitudes to abortion and prostitution shifted as a result of the processes of criminalisation and decriminalisation?3. Compare and contrast labelling theory and a social control theory of your choice in order to explain the stigma associated with mental illness in contemporary Australia.4. Restorative justice is an approach to punishment and crime management which attempts to reintegrate an offender with their community and restore relationships affected by the criminal offences (Roach Anleu 2006, p. 310). To what extent do discretionary powers in policing or the judicial system help and/or hinder the achievement of the goal of restorative justice?5. Critically discuss whether sociological theories of deviance have been adequate to account for white collar and organisational crime?
