Synthesis – “Predictably Irrational” and “Who Says Elephants Can’t Dance”

Synthesis – “Predictably Irrational” and “Who Says Elephants Can’t Dance”

Project description
Two books are PREDICTABLY IRRATIONAL: THE HIDDEN FORCES THAT SHAPE OUR DECISIONS (D. ARIELY, 2008)
and Who Says Elephants Can’t Dance (Gerstner, 2002: The inside story of the turnaround of IBM)

In this synthesis paper you will bring information from two books together to identify overlapping or contrasting themes, generate interesting insights, and describe ways to apply these insights in today’s business environment. First you need to select two books from the list provided. You need to have one business book and one non-business book.

Summarize the main arguments of each book. This should be no more than one page of your total paper. You will not be able to discuss every aspect of both books; but rather you will need to choose the most relevant, interesting, and salient details from each.

Your summary should answer the following questions:
What are the primary themes of your book(s)?
What question(s) is/are the book(s) attempting to answer?
Your introduction should introduce both books and the topics you’ll be discussing.

Synthesize the themes from the two books. The most important thing is that your books are constantly in conversation.
Your synthesis should answer the following questions:

? What relationships do you see between the main themes or key ideas/concepts of each book? How would you bring themes from these books together in a useful and meaningful way? What do you think accounts for, or causes, these differences and similarities? Keep in mind that these books come from different disciplinary perspectives, and may be concerned with answering different questions. What conclusions can you draw from the different approaches taken by different authors to similar issues?
? So what? How does this apply to business today and how will this benefit the work you will do?

After the synthesis you should have come to a new conclusion of some sort. Your conclusion should clarify this new understanding of the topic(s) you have selected to write about.
