INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS [MAN 3600]
DR. STEVEN SMITH
FALL 2013
The Global Market Analysis (GMA) is an analysis of one (1) substantive article
that covers a current, real world international business topic. The article must
come from the international business (IB) press. Examples of the IB press
includes, but is not limited to the following: Business Week, Forbes, Fortune,
Harvard Business Review, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Investor’s
Business Daily, New York Times Business Section, The Economist, etc.
There are two (2) GMAs assigned this semester. The assignment requires that
you identify an article that relate to the topics covered in this course. The purpose
is to build a strong connection between the theories, concepts, research and
models covered in the textbook and current events and developments in the
global business environment. It is your responsibility to analyze the article and
illustrate the linkages in 12 pages or less. The assignment is to be submitted on
Blackboard by the due dates presented below.
Please use the following outline for your analysis:
1. Title/Authors/Source of Article
2. Topic/Subject Area
3. Introduction/Background
4. Key Issues
5. Analysis/Linkages to International Business Topic
This is the key section where you analyze the key issues identified in the
previous section, using the models, theories, and/or frameworks covered
in the textbook. The objective is to link the topic and issues in the article
with the content covered in the chapters. You are only required to make a
connection with at least one of the main topics in at least one of chapters
in the assigned in the textbook sections (see table below). The analysis
has to be sound and the linkages made very clearly. This is the most
important section of the GMA.
6. Assessment/Conclusions
Based on your analysis in the previous section, provide you overall
assessment and conclusions, again, based on your understanding of the
key issues and relevant theories in the textbook.
7. Implications for IB Managers
Ultimately, this assignment is all about making sense of how global
business issues affect individual managers and the decisions they make in
their day-to-day activities. Issues in the broader environment have direct
and indirect effects on industries, organizations, and managers globally.
This is the section where you should explain why the issue(s) analyzed in
your GMA is important for managers to be aware of as they
This structure will guide the analysis and give you an opportunity to assess the
key concepts in the article more concisely. It will also guide you to analyze the
article and not summarize it. This assignment is not a summary, so please do
not summarize the article.
I encourage the use of diagrams, graphs, and tables in the GMA to support
the analysis. Remember, the maximum number of pages is twelve (12)
including any diagrams, tables or graphs. There is no minimum and long as
the analysis covers all of the key areas. You are not asked or required to
use other sources other than the article you have chosen to analyze and
the textbook; however, if you do use other sources of information (articles,
data, tables, etc.) you must include a citation for the sources in a separate
“Works Cited” section at the end of the GMA. If you are using graphs,
tables or diagrams from outside sources, you must cite the source
immediately below.
Please submit the GMA on Blackboard. A folder called “GMA Assignments” has
been set up for you to submit the GMA Reports and the articles. The topics and
due dates for the GMAs are as follows:

The article you choose for your analysis cannot be older than three
months. It must connect to at least one topic, theory, model or framework
discussed in any of the chapters in the assigned part of the textbook. When you
submit the GMA, please submit the article as well, preferably as a pdf file. The
article does not count towards the page total for the GMA.
Good luck! I’m looking forward to reading some excellent reports!
