Assignment title

Write an assignment of 4,000 words starting with a research question or a set of linked research questions in any topic in social science, suggesting two or more alternate designs, and assessing these alternatives in terms of design issues. Include an analysis of design features such as timing, groups, allocation to groups, any interventions, and the sequence of measurement or observation episodes, and an assessment of each design in terms of its rigour, practicality, ethical implications, sampling, and validity.

Some general pointers

Throughout the module we have considered what ‘Research Design’ is and we have particularly drawn upon some of the definitions offered by Thomas (2013), Gorard (2013) and Robson (2011). We have also looked at a selection of designs in greater detail (e.g. case study, longitudinal, historical, action research, experimental designs).

In your assignment you should contrast two or more of these designs. Given our general position that different designs lend themselves to different types of research question, the contrasting designs you choose will probably be best suited to subtly different, although related, research questions. You can also focus upon designs we have not covered in detail in the module.

If relevant, you are welcome to consider designs in relation to your own ongoing or planned research. Therefore the assignment you do (and the feedback you receive) should be helpful for your research into the future. Nevertheless, don’t feel limited by your own research – it can be interesting and important to think about very different ways of designing research (even if they may be impractical given the resources you have available as a research student).

This should just give a brief structure of the planned assignment (no more than a page in length, and ideally shorter). This gives you an opportunity to check that the work you have planned aligns with what the assignment requires.

In an essay of 1,100-1,500 words, propose the design of a research study that looks at the multiple reasons for juvenile delinquency. Your essay should include the following:

The operational definitions used
The method of data collection
The various independent variables
The dependent variable
How multivariate regression analysis is required to complete a study of this type
You must use a minimum of five academic resources to support your essay.
