Harlem Renaissance

The Harlem renaissance was a name given to social activities that include cultural, social and artistic explosion that arise in Harlem towards the end of World War 1 and  the middle of 1930s.  During that time cultural center, artists, musicians, poets, photographers, and scholars welcomed the opportunities that came with the literary movement. The renaissance led many African-American fled from the southern part where they were oppressive caste system, and they were searching for a better place where they can express their talents.

Harlem renaissance was illustrated by different characteristics and themes. Racial pride was a leading theme that was presented in the idea of New Negro, who through his or her artistic work could challenge the pervading racism, promote progressive politics, racial and social integration. The creation of different artwork was meant to uplift the race. Some of the themes influenced the exposure of slavery and the identification of African-American traditions.

The primary objective of Harlem renaissance was to support all the activities carried by African –American people.  The movement gave fully support to black patron, black-owned businesses, and publications. However, it needed the support from white Americans such Carl van Vechten who provided so much assistance that led to opening doors that would otherwise remain closed for black American community.

During this period, the African- American used artistic works to prove their humanity and demand for equality. The Harlem renaissance led to publications of their work by mainstream publication centers. Many authors began to publish their work; Magazines, novels, and newspaper were some of the work they published. The new fiction draw attention from the nation and some authors such as Jessie Fauset, James Weldon Johnson, and Omar al Amir were recognized

Harlem renaissance was more than artistic movement, as it was possessed by sociological development and at the same time different ethnic pride was freely expressed. The renaissance became very beneficial to many African –American people as it inspired them to rise into creating great artist and mature in their works. It also provides them with an important opportunity to bring equality and kill racism.
