1) Some have argued that while some technological advancements have not directly led to reductions in
crime, they have still had substantial positive impacts on the criminal justice system. Identify two
technological advancements used in courts or corrections that have had positive impacts even though
they are not directly tied to reducing crime. Describe each advancement in detail and explain how it has
been useful despite not directly reducing crime. Finally, present your view of whether financial
investments in IT in the criminal justice system need to ultimately result in crime reductions in order to
be worthwhile.
2) One issue that pervades many of the readings in this course, though not the sole focus of any particular
reading, is the potential negative impact that the increasing use of information technology can have on
privacy and civil rights. Choose two technological advancements in any branch of the criminal justice
system (policing, courts, and/or corrections) that might threaten privacy and/or civil rights. First
describe the advancement, and then explain why it might be considered a threat to privacy or civil
rights. Finally, explain why you are, or are not, concerned about these potential threats
