Assignment 1

Your assignment is to conceptualize a hypothetical information system project and describe its context and purpose. You can design the project for your own organization, an organization that you or someone you know is familiar with, or even for your own imaginary business. Remember, you need to consider both key aspects of information systems—namely information requirements and development methodology.

Once you’ve got a pretty solid idea about the project you’d like to formulate, please prepare a 2-page paper describing your hypothetical information system project.

Make sure to include:

• What the project is about including boundaries
• What information gathering you see as needed to make it work
• How the information will be USED for system requirements
• What are the key features of the organizational context of the project
• Why the project is useful
• Why the project will be successful

Assignment 2

Please write a 4-page paper summarizing the feasibility of your hypothetical information systems project.

Please consider the political, economic, technical, operational, legal, and schedule aspects in your feasibility study, and make sure to discuss the following issues in your presentation:

• The scope of the proposed system—its functions, users, dimensions and constraints
• A rough estimate of the system size, costs, schedules, etc.
• The benefits of the system—both quantitative and qualitative measures
• Any systems that might compete with your proposed system
• Your strategies to present the systems to stakeholders and clients for review
• Please conclude your paper with a paragraph or two discussing the whole experience of this hypothetical project design exercise—what you learned, what you found frustrating, and any suggestions you have as to how it could be improved for future students.

Assignment 3

Please compose a 2-page paper documenting a refined version of your project description, and discussing the different stakeholders and clients’ interests and any potential political conflicts in implementing your information system project.

In your paper, please make sure to discuss the following points, in additional to presenting the refined project description:

• Identify stakeholders and clients
• Identify the perspectives and perceptions of the different stakeholders and clients
• Describe the political dimensions of your project and identify ways in which such politics may influence your project and implementation processes
• Describe the conditions under which social and technical system sub-optimization in your project might occur, and identify strategies for avoiding these conditions
• Identify your strategies for preventing your project from becoming a “death march project.”

Assignment 4

Your assignment is to choose a suitable methodology for the hypothetical information system project you came up with in Module 1.

Please write a 3- page paper discussing why and how you selected a given methodology from those learned in the course to design your project.

Make sure to thoroughly consider the context of your project and include in your discussion the following topics:

• What about your project led you to choose this methodology?
• What other development methodologies did you consider?
• What methodologies were your major candidates, and why?
• What methodologies did you quickly eliminate, and why?
• Why have you chosen the final methodology that you did from among the major candidates? How did you make such a choice?
