What do you think Foote meant in the quoted passage: what specific events and ideas related to the Civil War changed the character of the United States as compared to the intentions of the Founding Fathers?

How important is the oft-debated question as to why the Civil War was fought in understanding its impact on the present-day nature of the United States? Be as specific as possible as to wartime events and their outcomes as they relate to future development of the US.
