Burman critiques attachment theory

Burman critiques attachment theory by arguing that it is a mother-blaming theory. In her critique, she also questions the notion of mothering as an instinctual behavior (innate, natural) by drawing on Nancy Shepher-Hughes study of women in a shantytown in Brazil (p. 140-141). She writes, “What has been understood as ‘maternal deprivation’ in some circumstances has more to do with poverty than with women’s ‘mothering qualities’.” (p.141). Discuss and evaluate Burman’s argument. Draw on the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development study that Ruth Slater discusses in her review of attachment theory (p. 213) in your discussion.
