Directions: The student will select one of the following technologies to investigate: Defibrillation, Mechanical Ventilation, types of Dialysis, Hemodynamic Monitoring, Intracranial pressure monitoring, Hypothermia therapy, Pacemakers and implantable defibrillators, or other technologies with the approval of the instructor. The student will submit the chosen topic to the professor three weeks before the paper is submitted.

Grading: The paper should be approximately 5-7 pages long and will be graded on the following criteria:
I.                    Introduction and clearly stated reason for choosing the topic. (5 pts)

II.                  Description of the selected technology, including basic function, indications for use, and possible complications. (20 pts)

III.                Describe important elements of safe nursing care for patients receiving the selected technology, incorporating professional standards of care. (20pts).

IV.                Evaluate the content of three nursing evidence based articles and analyze how findings could impact the delivery of nursing care and how they relate to the QSEN concepts of safety and technology. (30pts)

V.                  Analyze safety concerns related to the use of the selected technology and nursing interventions aimed at maintaining safe utilization of the technology. (15pts)
