Option A

For this essay assignment you will choose to explore the music of one of the countries of Southeast Asia. You may make your selection from the countries of China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, or Thailand.

or…

Option B

For this essay assignment you will choose to explore the music of one of the Pacific Island cultures. You may make your selection from the cultures of Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, or any other of the Pacific Islands, including Hawaii.

Whether you choose Option A or B, your objective will be to discover four important things about the music of the country of your choice:

1. What are the main traditional aesthetics that provide the basis for the country’s musical tradition?
2. What are the principal traditional musical instruments of the culture? Please provide YouTube video links showing the instruments in action to support your findings.
3. What are the distinguishing characteristics of the main forms or genres of traditional music of the culture? Please provide YouTube video links showing the forms in performance to support your findings.
4. What kind of current musical trends currently prevail in the country? Please provide YouTube video links showing the trends in performance to support your findings.
Divide your essay into four sections, each corresponding to the four numbered topics listed above.
