QUESTION 8 From Previous order #562603
Trethewy, C. E., Burrows, J. M., Clausen, D., & Doherty, S. R. (2012). Effectiveness of cricoid pressure in preventing gastric aspiration during rapid sequence intubation in the emergency department: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial. Trials, 13(1), 17.

1 What is the intended purpose of the study?
This study was designed to compare the application of 30-40 newtons to the standard, unmeasured cricoid pressure in preventing gastric content aspiration as well as determining the incidence of the clinically-defined aspiration syndromes following RSI.
2 How does the research questions/hypotheses address the problem as detailed by the researcher?
The hypothesis statement outlines that the use of cricoid pressure during rapid sequence intubation in the emergency department does not prevent gastric content aspiration.
3 How does the content in the purpose statement and research questions define the methodology used in the study?
The purpose statement and research question focus on two main variables; cricoid pressure and gastric content aspirate. These variables can only be measured from the subjects and therefore, this defines the use of measurement in data collection.
4 How was the data collected and analyzed?
Data was collected by measurement of the cricoid pressure and gastric aspirates. Features such as intubation complications were observed and entered into a data sheet. Continuous measurements were analyzed by means and standard deviations. The means were then compared using independent health t-tests while a Chi-squared test was undertaken for two group comparison.
5 What was the benefit of using the selected statistical test?
The use of chi-squared test and independent health t-test would be appropriate in comparing the intervention and the control groups.
6 What was the outcome of the study?
The trials are still ongoing to proof that cricoid pressure is ineffective for preventing gastric content aspiration.
