Discussion

Action Items

Read the Week 5 Key Points.
Your professor will start a discussion using the Discuss tool.
(Required) Respond to your professor’s discussion in the Week 5 Critical Thinking Discussion topic:
By Thursday, use the Discuss tool to write a 200-300 word response (no more than one page) to your professor’s post.
By Sunday, review the posts of your peers. Write a 150 word follow-up response to that peer in which you respectfully and professionally offer your opinion of his/her responses to the discussion:
Pose a clarifying question (e.g., What did you mean by…, Why did you say…, What was your intention…, What is the connection…, What were your assumptions…?).
Provide an additional insight (e.g., an “ah-hah” moment).

Discussion.
This week we have been learning about different fallacious arguments, and in your assignment for this week, “Exercises on Fallacious Appeals” you will need to provide 3 examples of different fallacies. For our discussion this week I would like you to choose one of those three fallacious arguments that you have found. This can be print advertising, a commercial on TV, a billboard, any form of advertising is acceptable as long as you can share it with the rest of the class (for example, if you wanted to write about a billboard you would need to take a picture of it and share that in your post).
Your post should include a link to the ad, and your analysis of how it utilizes fallacious logic. I have included a few examples in this week’s lecture, which should give you an idea of the types of things you can look for (of course you cannot use the same examples that I or any of your classmates use). You can write about any of the fallacies from this week’s materials including the lecture.
Try and choose a fallacy that has not been covered very much by your classmates (although some overlap is inevitable). This initial post is due by Thursday, and must be between 200-300 words.
By Sunday I would like you to respond to at minimum one classmate who has written about a different fallacy than you did. That response should be at least 150 words. As these are graded by participation the more you post the more points you will get.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
