The student will examine a nonprofit or public sector organization of his or her choosing. Utilizing the procedure outlined in Nanus’ Appendix (Visionary Leadership for the Public Sector), answer the questions that are delineated in the two sections entitled The Vision Audit and the Vision Scope. Based on the categories of the audit presented on pages 190-203 in the Nanus text the audit should address the following topics:

The Vision Audit
1. What is the current mission or purpose of the organization? Do you believe it is appropriate? Why or why not? [1-2 paragraphs]
2. What does the organization provide to society? [1 paragraph]
3. What is the organization’s unique position in that industry? [1 paragraph]
4. What does it take for the organization to succeed? [1 paragraph]
5. What are the organizational values that drive decisions and behaviors? [1-2 paragraphs]
6. What are the operating strengths and weaknesses of the organization? [Can be listed in tabular form]
7. What is the current strategy, and how can it be defended? [1-2 paragraphs]
8. Does the organization have a clearly stated vision? If it does have a vision, what is it? [1 paragraph]
9. If the organization continues on its current path, will it be sustainable over the next ten years? Why or why not? [1-2 paragraphs].
10. Do the key people in the organization know where the organization is going and are they in agreement over the present direction? [1 paragraph]
11. Do the structures, processes, personnel, incentives, and information systems support the current direction of the organization? Please explain your answer. [1-2 paragraphs]

The Vision Scope
1. Name the key stakeholders (e.g., government agencies, clients or patrons, special interest groups, funders or philanthropists, etc.) and identify the most important ones. You can present the list in bulleted or tabular form, followed by a one paragraph description of your rationale. [1 paragraph]
2. Examine the top five stakeholders and describe their interest in the success of the organization [for example, if there were no Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), industrial accidents would skyrocket]. [1 paragraph]
3. What threats or opportunities emerge from these stakeholders? [3-4 paragraphs]
4. Imagine yourself as a stakeholder in this organization. What would you contribute to the organization’s success? [1 paragraph]
5. What are some constraining factors (i.e., time, societal, or financial constraints) that might hinder the organizational vision? [1 paragraph]
6. What are the top two to three mission critical objectives that the organizational vision must accomplish? How will you measure success? [1-2 paragraphs]
7. Which critical issues must be addressed in the vision? [1-2 paragraphs]

Your paper should be 6-8 pages in length (excluding title page with running head, reference page, or any appendices if necessary). Your paper is to be submitted Sunday midnight of Week Five. It should be submitted using the link in the Week Five Assignments folder. [This paper is worth 400 points.]
