Barriers to E-Commerce adoption in Albania

From an economic viewp01oint, today´s scenarios of doing business are very different than that of a few decades ago.
Thanks to internet, Economy has become globalized; markets today are more flexible and dynamic. Information Technology is no longer an option and is now an obligation. The existing and new companies are forced to comply with the new rules of globalization in order to survive and to be successful. E-commerce is one of the activities that have changed the way of entrepreneurship which as transformed totally the way of companies operating through internet.

Since the penetration of the Internet in relation to the population of a country is closely linked to the Internet use and skills, according to (“Internet World Stats” 2015) Albania lies very close to the European average as regards the use of internet. When you see these statistics that Albanian average of using internet is around 63%, or the Smartphone penetration at around 56% of the mobile users, there comes a very simple question to our mind – What is the reason that Albanian are really using internet? Or Why Albanians are not deeply engaged in their shopping online? Why use of credit cards is not comparable with the region or the EU?
Albania with its 1.815.146 internet users in 2013-2014 represents about 0.3% of Internet users in Europe (F. Kennedy & Mar Hauksson, 2012), In other words, the statistics about internet users increased by 51.900% from 2000 to 2010. According to this report one of the most commonly used search-engine among Albanians is Google with a penetration of 94% while other players global-known like Bing receives 3.77% of the online traffic and yahoo about 1%.

All these questions need a deeply analysis in terms of culture, legislation, doing business climate, e-banking culture, trust, internet skills or Address System in Albania.
