Thesis question: To what extent can historians use pictures and photography to explain how civilians experienced war?

Make sure you use the sources provided in the text to support your thesis/argument. Make sure you have a clear thesis and that the paper is well organized and written. Your paper should be at least 2-4 written pages (this does not include the title and reference page). Paper should be double spaced (no extra spaced between paragraphs) and you should use Times Roman font size 12. You should have 1 inch margins all around your paper. Paper should be turned in as a Word Document and should be uploaded, not copied and pasted to the text section.

Paper organization:

I. Title Page- Make sure your first page is a title page that has your title, name, date, and course name. No other headings should be found in the paper. The page after the title page is the first page of your essay and should begin with the introduction to your paper.

II. First paragraph should introduce your topic and end with your thesis statement. Below is a link to creating a working thesis. You can use this or ask me if you have questions about having a strong thesis. FCC also has a writing center that you can go to for assistance if you are not clear as to how to create a thesis.

III. Your introduction should be followed with background information. Provide details from the Brown book, your Oakes text or any other source can also be used. All sources should be both cited in the text and in the reference pages. To make this easy we will use the MLA format.

IV. Most of the paper should be the supporting points of the thesis/argument. Make sure you are using the sources and analyzing them. In other words, describe the source, provide the positive and negatives of the source, point out the validity or biasness of the source.

V. Finally, make sure you have a strong and clear conclusion. Your conclusion should not just summarize your points but also make a strong connection to your thesis. This is your last point and it should align with everything you have presented.

Items to help you:

•To help you analyze the sources, pg. 253 & 272 has general questions you should consider and may include in your paper to show evidence of analysis.

•There is also a table on pgs. 254-255 to help you organize details and information.

•A document analysis is not a summary or a research paper that just “retells” what happened. You must make an argument and support it with details from the sources provided.
