Writers often tell, but good writers often show. Description is not the process of using artificial, subjective, and flowery language, but it is the application of the senses and detail to show the story in the most natural way. Without description, narration cannot be effective. It takes telling and showing to move a story forward and to impact readers.

In this descriptive paper, you will need to upload a descriptive essay (650 words minimum) in the appropriate MLA format.

Directions: Select a place of your choice: a precise place in your home or some other place where you usually spend some time now and then. For instance, you may select your room, the living room, your parent’s office, or the backyard, etc. You may also select an outside place such as your job location, your school, your gym, a park, or some other specific location. Once you select this place, you will need to go there and take notes for about an hour or so; this strategy of taking notes is highly recommended. You may use pictures or video to substitute physically going there if your selected place is remote or from the past. First, you will use objective description (what you see), and then you will add your emotions, point of view–here you are adding your subjective description. Also focus on the macro and micro levels of description. Once you have your notes, type them later and use them to build your essay. Incorporate some words from the posted sense words list to enrich your vocabulary. At this stage, you should be able to add dialogue, plot, character profiles or some other techniques to unify your essay.
