Writing Assignment #1: Analyzing Philosophical Themes in a Fictional Work

For this paper, you are asked to select a film and to analyze the ways in which our philosophical themes concerning metaphysics (What is real?) and epistemology (What is true?) arise within it. After you’ve selected a film, you need to develop a philosophical argument (conclusion + premises) related to these themes and using the philosophers and theories we’ve been reading about this semester.

The first step is to brainstorm about the possible conclusions that can be drawn about metaphysics and epistemology given the film that you selected. Keep in mind that there are a number of possible conclusions – select one that you can support using good reasoning and evidence from the film.

Once you’ve identified your conclusion, you need to come up with (at least) 3 supporting premises that help to prove that your conclusion is true. Premises involve logic, reasoning, evidence, and/or examples. Each premise needs additional supporting information to demonstrate that it is true. Be sure that you make extremely clear how the premises you develop actually support the conclusion – don’t take it for granted that the reader will understand your thought process!

Guidelines

4 page minimum – double-spaced (except for name header, which is single-spaced) – 12-point font – no unnecessary spaces – no title page – and 1-inch margins on all sides
No outside sources – only our textbook and the film you selected.
Use your own words – do not quote from sources!
Edit your work for grammar and spelling mistakes.
Make sure that you’ve got a philosophical argument.
Do not summarize the story – only give enough background to contextualize your paper.
Include the bibliographical information about the film.
