This essay asks you to interpret Netsilik butchery and carcass processing as human ecology and to integrate previous course material with this week’s content on taphonomy. Your essay should be about 5 paragraphs long (1-1 ½ pages), with an introductory paragraph (starts with a topic sentence that characterizes your response or sets out an opinion that you will subsequently support). The topic asks you to consider human ecology in its material and behavioral manifestations. As with your research essay at the beginning of the class, you should also be thinking about economy—production, exchange, and consumption of materials—and some basic human biology, such as maintaining body temperature, nutrition, and social behaviors to ensure human reproduction.
