Read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Think carefully about the implications of the various Articles made in the UN Declaration. All these Articles posit certain rights and guarantees for all human beings. These include an adequate standard of living, equal pay, access to a quality education, tolerance/understanding of differences, etc.

Read through the UN Declaration of Human Rights and choose about 1-2 of the Declaration’s Articles that you think are important. With those Articles in mind address the following questions:

To what extent are the aims of those Articles being accomplished or violated? In what ways? Are the US institutions we discussed in class (e.g., the US/Global economy, education, and the media) generally supportive of these rights? Provide examples to support your view by referring to at least 2 readings from the course reader. Also include videos, lectures, and at least 2 other sources from outside of class. Apply relevant concepts/terms discussed in class (for example, socialization, hidden curriculum, institutional discrimination, the social construction of reality, etc).

In your conclusion: Answer the question: What are some basic actions people can take to advance these rights? Is it important to participate in social/community action? Do you think the aims of the organizations you participated with (and the time you spent helping them) have had an important impact on ensuring that basic human rights are being met? – Your essay should be 4-5 pages long, typed and double-spaced. All margins should be 1″.
