Course Objective
1.To develop a better understanding of important developments, events and individuals in American history since Native American migration.
2. To develop a better understanding of the nature of the relationship between people and the historical process.
3. To acquire a better understanding of the techniques and tools of the historian.
4. To continue to develop and improve study and research skills which reading comprehension, critical thinking and effective verbal and written communication.
5. To utilize and understand how current technology works as a study and research tool.
Course Themes
We will study American history, society and culture from the period of Native American migration through the Civil War. History is the study of forces of change and forces of stability in the world, over time. With that simple definition as a starting point, we will look at how major forces have shaped American civilization. These forces take the form of some major longitudinal themes that we will trace in our course.
LIBERTY: The growth of the ideal of democracy and the pursuit of freedom.
EQUALITY: The diversity of the American people and their struggle for fairness.
POWER: The exceptional nature of American strengths and resources, and the responsibilities that come with these.
