Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with curriculum and learning in the elementary school classroom — curriculum design (including the hidden and null curriculum), multicultural perspectives, instructional planning, content selection, and teaching strategy development. Students will also become familiar with expectations of the teaching profession. Before we examine these tasks, however, we will explore the beliefs and ideas that support our personal notions about teaching. In addition, we will examine Schwab’s commonplaces (teachers, learners, content, context, and curriculum-making) within the curriculum to build understandings of the foundations for classroom practice. Further, we will consider how students, teachers, context and content interact to construct classroom/school experiences. There are many elements that affect classrooms and teaching, which, if a teacher understands them, can empower, not impede, them.

Expected course Outcomes:
–    Explore her beliefs about education, teaching and learning how those beliefs fit into teaching.
–    Cultivate and demonstrate an understanding of the commonplaces (both implicit and explicit) of curriculum.
–    Gain an understanding of the influences on a teacher’s time and curricular and instructional choices.
–    Develop an awareness of choices and decisions that affect a teacher’s participation in the classroom.
–    Investigate ways to cultivate humanity and address issues of justice for all students.
–    Understand the professional behavior and dispositions needed to be a teacher.
–    Understand and practice structures and strategies necessary to teacher planning and preparation.
