Religious Propaganda

The focus of the last three Unit PowerPoints has been art as a means of religious Propaganda. Christianity is a very visual religion and this visual tradition really develops during this Early Modern Period. For this essay I want you to analyze the different ways the Catholic Church has used art/architecture as a means of religious propaganda. Think of where the art is located? Who was the intended audience? What message was meant to be understood? How does this all change from the Renaissance to the Counter Reformation. The Unit PowerPoint gives you a number of examples of these idea.. what else can you find? You will want to think about examples of 2-dimensional art, 3-dimensional art and architecture. What materials are used? What techniques are used? What symbolism is used? What narratives are similar/different? Are there specific visual comparisons? You can use examples of art from the textbook reading, the unit powerpoint and from independent research online. The more variety of information and specifics (examples of art/architecture, names, dates, events, vocabulary, concepts) you and include, the better your grade.

Each Essay should have a formal, thematic organization. You should concentrate on the information presented in that week’s PowerPoint and Chapter Readings. For maximum points your essay should be two full pages (typed, double spaced, 10 pt. font): No Longer and No Shorter! Practice formality and academic level writing (no jokes, anecdotes, personal references – this is not an email/conversation)

For example:

Introduction Paragraph – Introduce topic and characteristics

Thematic Paragraph – Introduce Characteristic #1

3-4 examples of art/architecture that support/use this characteristic

Vocabulary

Specific names, dates, events

Conclude and transition
