Personal Leadership Qualities Paper
Leadership qualities are instrumental in the development of team effort in the workplace environment. Despite being crucial in organizing people towards the achievement or completion of tasks, leadership skills are central to the improvement of the performance of the business. In that regard, developing leadership qualities present the implication of coordinating efforts to better the performance of the institution. In that respect, the nursing profession is one that requires leadership skills to organize the effort and improve the overall performance of the medical center in service delivery. This paper draws from results of my leadership qualities assessment based on the ratings of the Mind Tools website (Mind Tools, 2015). Further, the paper delves into an analysis of individual leadership qualities with relevance and ramifications for the nursing profession in my capacity as a practicing nurse.
Foremost, my overall score was a 62 out of a possible 100 score that indicated that I have promising leadership qualities aside from the fact that I have never had any leadership experience. As a practicing nurse, I believe that my average score places me in a competitive position about a leadership role in the nursing profession. Leadership skills are central to the management of operations in healthcare. As a nurse, I believe that effective leadership is critical in pooling efforts to generate needed pool to meet specific needs of patients. Change is one aspect that the Nursing Health Care Services profession cannot ignore. Daily routines to periodic changes in structure and management of affairs, changes, are inevitable in the nursing field (Oliver, 2006).
About my score in leadership, qualities self-confidence proves crucial to the management of change in the nursing field. In that respect, I scored a seven out of a possible ten on self-confidence. Secondly, my score under positive outlook and attitude was also a seven while my emotional intelligence capped at a score of six. I scored a seven in my ability to offer a vision of the future to subordinates as well as a seven on my motivational skills. Similarly, I scored yet another seven in my capacity as a role model and a six as an effective manager. On my ability to provide support and stimulation, I managed a score of seven out of a possible ten as well or a fourteen out of possible twenty. According to Glickman, Baggett, Krubert, Eric, Peterson, Kevin, and Schlman (2007), promoting quality in health care requires effective managerial skills. Mentorship, role modeling, and coordination are aspects of leadership in the nursing profession crucial to the achievement of commonly set objectives. Hence, the management of the organization should take keen interest to deliver on the attributes (Frankel, 2011). Therefore, the nursing manager needs to be an individual who can provide guidance by inspiring people to follow his or her lead. Moreover, leadership does not only require guidance in the right direction to be effective. It also encompasses developing emotional intelligence that helps in comprehension of the needs of those who follow.
Based on my scores from the self-evaluation leadership test, I realize that I have a long way to go in developing my leadership skills and tapping into my talents as a practicing nurse. Practical implications of leadership qualities in the nursing profession are in ensuring that the staff provides accountability. As discussed earlier the nursing profession is characteristic of change instances which needs adequate leadership qualities to form an appropriate reaction. For that reason, my score offers a limelight into the capacity that needs building to improve my leadership qualities. In essence, as a practicing nurse I believe that the leadership qualities offered prove significant for nurses at whichever capacity regardless of whether it’s a leadership role. Hence, I intend to improve my leadership skills so that I can be of adequate service in the profession.
