Civil Rights and Civil Liberties

Answer all three parts.

1. Visit the University of Alaska Anchorage web site on the death penalty and examine the various issues presented. Then visit the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) web site and at least one other anti-death penalty site*. Then visit the pro-death penalty site of the Clark County, Indiana Prosecutor and at least one other pro-death penalty site*. Each organization expresses strong opinions on the death penalty. Contrast their positions on this issue. On what foundations do their opinions rest? How do you personally feel about this issue? Has the information gained in this search influenced your opinion? Compare the pro & anti presentations to the “objective” approach of the University of Alaska site. Which is more effective politically?

With evidence from these sites discuss briefly the constitutional issues surrounding religious freedom and what you think would be the most effective way to protect the rights of religious groups without imposing religion on others?

3. Look at the issues related to the American flag at the links below. Examine those both for and against and the opinion of the Supreme Court. Which do you agree with and why?
