6.2 TD: A PATTERN FOR THE SOUND STUDY OF SCRIPTURE

6.2 TD: A PATTERN FOR THE SOUND STUDY OF SCRIPTURE

Order Description
INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
The focus of this discussion will be to demonstrate a pattern for the sound study of scripture.
This lays the foundation upon which all else in the sermon built. Without the correct approach
to scripture, any outcomes will be faulty.

Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:
??Demonstrate a pattern for the sound study of scripture.

RESOURCES
??Textbook: The Art and Craft of Biblical Preaching
??Bible
??6.1a PowerPoint: Unit 6 Sample Layout of a Message

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Again, Paul was clear in his instructions to Timothy.
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be
ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
It is as if Paul wants to direct Timothy’s very approach to the scriptures themselves. He does not
want him to do anything with regard to the scriptures that would bring question on Timothy, his
hearers, or the Kingdom. If Timothy is to handle the Word, (and that is precisely what the
Gospel communicator does) this he must do correctly.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. For your initial post, discuss:
a. Am I exerting myself in this course, putting forth my best efforts?
b. Have I been a person of honor, putting into circulation the full counsel of God, without shaving it to fit circumstance, culture, or people’s approval?
c. Have I labored well at my craft- the ministry of the Word, diakonos ho logos, according to Acts 6.4? This, and Eph 4.11-, is the ministry description of the minister.
d. Have I carried myself, publically and privately, in word and deed, as one who has nothing about which to be ashamed?
e. Have I handled the Word so as to cut it straight, handling and teaching truth directly and correctly?
f. And lastly, is the word that I have been faithful to give God’s Word, and not my own?
