Walt Whitman is regarded as the poet of America because he attempted to capture the essence of the United States.  In “Song of Myself” (Part 31), he writes, I believe a leaf of grass is no less than the journeywork of the stars. What does this leaf of grass mean to Whitmans sense of Americanness? Why do you think he called his life’s work Leaves of Grass?
