Project description
In conjunction with Potter, we have talked about entertainment formulas, the demography of television characters, the ways in which characters are presented, and potential outcomes associated with those presentations. This assignment calls on you to analyze a fictional TV entertainment program. Pick one of the three TV shows listed below. The shows are uploaded on OnCourse and you will find the links below. If you have difficulty watching the videos, let us know.

Watch the whole episode that you choose (you will probably have to do so several times). Based on that episode, write answers to each of the following questions. Make sure that you answer all sections of each question. Support your arguments with evidence.
1. Identify (a) the shows genre (plus subgenres if applicable) and (b) the major themes and formulas used in telling the story. Use specific examples from the show to justify your answers.
2. Select any two main characters. (a) Describe their demographic attributes/characteristics. Do these characters differ from those normally presented in TV shows (as noted in class and in Potters book)? If so, in which ways? How representative are they of the US population at large? (b) Describe the roles they play and the personal attributes/behavior they exhibit. To what extent, if at all, are the two characters stereotyped in terms of their occupations and personalities?
3. Consider the advertisements that are embedded in/attached to the show. (a) What sorts of products were advertised? Based on the advertisements and the show content, who is the likely target audience for this show? (b) Did you observe anything noteworthy about the placement of the ads in the episode? Did you observe any product placement in this episode?
All parts of the assignment must be printed. Use one-inch margins, a size 12 font. Your answers should not exceed two double spaced pages. We will not read beyond two pages. Staple the pages of the assignment together in the upper left-hand corner. Even betterprint one sheet of paper, double sided! Do not put your assignment in a folder, cover, or binder.
