PART III — ESSAY QUESTION (30%) Please read the following quote:
“The global history of sub-Saharan Africa is simple. Prior to about 1900, everyday life in sub-Saharan Africa was dominated by very local concerns. The Atlantic Slave Trade was created by Europeans for European interests and while it certainly affected the lives of Africans who were captured and taken to the Americas, it did not integrate everyday sub-Saharan African life into any significant global paradigms. This only happened when Europeans formally colonized the region in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and forced cash-cropping economies to develop. From then on, the story becomes one of how twentieth-century, Western-centered global paradigms not only impoverished sub-Saharan Africans but basically erased their local political and cultural formations.” — argument made by world historian S. Trawmann
Using specific examples and information from Donald R. Wright’s The World and a Very Small Place in Africa: A History of Globalization in Niumi, The Gambia (3rd edition, 2010), write an essay that upholds, refutes, or nuances the claims that S. Trawmann makes in the quote above by considering the history of Niumi. Your essay should be written in formal, complete sentences and should have an introduction that contains a thesis statement, a body wherein you discuss specific developments or examples from Niumi’s history that support your thesis, and a conclusion. You do NOT need to write out the above quote at the beginning of your essay; feel free to just refer to it as “Trawmann’s argument.” You do not need to refer to page numbers from The World and a Very Small Place in Africa. Your essay will be graded out of 30 marks.
