This movement resulted in the eventual creation of government-sponsored institutions to handle juvenile matters (juvenile courts, juvenile detention facilities, child welfare agencies, etc). What’s one advantage and disadvantage to treating juveniles differently than adults in relation to criminal or delinquent behavior?
2) Various court cases have defined the rights of juveniles in legal proceedings. Is it fair to deny juvenile the right to jury trial, or some of the other rights afforded to adults under the U.S. and State Constitutions?
3) Police are given more discretion when dealing with juveniles than with adults. Do you think this is better or worse for the juveniles, and why? Can this have an impact on the juvenile justice system?
4) The D.A.R.E. program and GREAT program are used by many school systems. Are they successful? How is success defined? Are they beneficial even if their intended goals are not met?
