1.    Read “Considering Your Purpose, Audience, and Point of View” on page 280 and “Choosing an Aspect of Your Subject to Emphasize” on page 281
2.    Pick a person, place, or thing and describe it. You can organize it either chronologically or spatially.
3.    Pick a dominant impression – see page 272
4.    Use more than one kind of sensory detail (or all five, if you like) in your description – see pages 270-271

5.    Use a comparison such as simile, metaphor, or personification.
6.    use spatial organization – have a clear vantage point (fixed or moving) – page 274
7.    Follow the outline (figure 12.1) on page 275 to organize essay. Good example on page 278.
8.    Create the outline first – this is very important!
The paper should be one and a half to two pages, double spaced, times new roman font.

The outline should follow this pattern

Title
Introduction
–    Background
–    Setting
–    Dominant impression
Sensory details and comparisons
–    Part 1
-supporting detail or comparison 1
-supporting detail or comparison 2
–    Part 2

-supporting detail or comparison 1
-supporting detail or comparison 2
–    Part 3
-supporting detail or comparison 1
-supporting detail or comparison 2
Conclusion
–    Reference to the dominant impression
–    Draws essay to a closer
