Scope
An explorative essay seeking to further understand Orientalism in Modern French art.
This essay will take a historic perspective analyzing the artistic travels, influences and paintings in Matisse’s excursion in Mo-rocco. Regionally, the works chosen during these travels include: The Little Woman (1912), The Casbah Gate (1912-1913), On the Terrace (1912-1913), Moroccan Cafe (1912-1913),The Seated Riffian (1912-1913) and The Moroccans (1915-1916). Through research, I will analyze the attributes which influenced Matisse Modernist approach, for example in the cultures, landscape, and peoples. Importantly, I will offer an analysis of the Islamic decorative influence represented in Matisse’s work.
