The texts to this point in the term have exemplified both tragic and comic genres and have presented rather formal structures and conventions of various plots. By contrast, Shaw was considered an experimentor and innovator with the dramatic form and with familiar generic conventions and thematic structures. In this essay, you will bulid on your work in In-Class #5 to consider Shaw’s Pygmalion in relation to at least one of the other primary texts analyzed so far. You may analyze any issue you wish related to form, genre, dramatic convention, or theme that brings Pygmalioninto conversation with at least one of the other primary texts we have covered so far (you may also refer to other contextual documents we have read, such as the “Pygmalion” myth from the Metamorphoses but at least two primary texts must be used). You may wish to explore, for example, the representation of traditional plots in Pygmalion–how does it conform or how does it thwart these plots, and how is this significantly similar/different to another text we have explored; you may address the issue of genre in Pygmalion; how does it compare to the other texts we’ve read in terms of it’s generic form or structure? You may wish to analyze the organizing theme of the course, performing self, in this and another primary text, or some other theme that demonstrates confluences between Pygmalion and another of the texts we have analyzed. Be sure that the focus and scope of your examination is delineated clearly in your analytical thesis and that you provide specific support examples from your texts.
