essay to differentiate between Sloppy and Neat people

Introduction Suzanne Britt wrote an essay to differentiate between Sloppy and Neat people, and how their respective attitudes vary. She argues that sloppy people are messy and will not get things done owing to their sloppiness; they save everything while planning to some day order and straighten them. Neat people according to the writer are that, the only messy thing in their houses is the trashcans. Neat people are clod and bums at heart and they place all their ideas together thus simplifying tough processes (Britt, 1983). The writer gives various examples differentiating the two people. This paper seeks to compare and contrast between the two people while giving a personal opinion on the matter. Sloppy and Neat people The author argues that sloppy people will never get neat since they aim higher. Neat people save and plan everything that one day they will work on them, but in the process, books fill the shelves, clothes pile up in the closet, the drawers remained filled with family mementos as the unread magazines pile up threatening to reach the ceiling. Neat people have inconsiderate attitude towards possession, and everything to them is another dust. When anything collects dust, it has to go. Neat people can even throw children out of the house to reduce the clutter. Neat people want instant results and not process, they operate on the principle of not handling items twice. Sloppy people cannot afford to part with anything. They give detailed loving attention to everything. When they say they are going to handle a task, they mean each and every word and not a stone will remain unturned. The problem with sloppy people is that, when they decide to clean their desks, each and every paper will be touched, but at the end of the whole process their desks will look exactly the same as they started. This is because sloppy people will create new piles of papers with every excavation. Neat people will just bulldoze their desks (Britt, ). Comparison and contrast A sloppy person has better morals than a neat person since a sloppy person’s habits are a direct consequence of their morals. Sloppy people will set unattainable goals and yet continue to strive for them, but a neat person would want to make it simple leading to instant and direct results. Both sloppy and neat people are lazy, but are distinctly different, a sloppy person can make family scrapbooks over which they put paper clippings, postcards, hair locks from their senior prom (Britt, 1983). A neat can even toy with an idea of throwing children out of the house just to deduce the disorderliness (Britt, 1983). Neat people are capable of being mean but sloppy people cannot be mean, this is because a neat person will not bring anything to avoid dirtying the house. The difference in the sloppy and neat person’s behavior of wastefulness describes the opposite forms of the two people, for example, the magazines, newspapers and books on their floors. The only similarity between a sloppy and neat person is their trash can content. Sloppy people are sensitive since they give much attention to every detail; however neat people just want results and can be said to be insensitive. Opinion In Suzanna Britt’s essay Neat vs. Sloppy people, it is arguable that Britt herself is a sloppy person. This can be concluded from the fact that she paints the sloppy people while trying to give reasons as to why they are better than the neat people. In my opinion, I do not think it is good to be in either side. As an American society, it is essential that people try to balance between the two. If people were to be sloppy, they will never clean and will leave everything as they are, and when people are too neat, they will not let their children play; therefore, will not have a life. I believe that I am a sloppy person because according to Britt, a sloppy person is a smart person who always is busy doing something, as well as, educating oneself. It is not that a sloppy person is sloppy per say it is that such a person constantly pick new goals or activities to do resulting in things pilling up, therefore, looking like do not clean, but in essence they do (Scarry & Scarry, 2008). On the other hand, I think that a neat person is selfish since all he/she can think of is to clean; therefore, neat persons are lazy because they do not buy anything or bring anything to the house thus will not make anything dirty. Additionally, the extent of laziness in a neat person is seen from their act of getting their mails while standing near a trash so as to throw it once they are done with the mail. In that respect, it is arguable that being too neat or too sloppy might result in some disorderliness. It is not safe be to be in either of the extremes. Conclusion Some of the Britt arguments are true while others are incorrect. For example, in as far as I might have a lot things to do, I still clean not irrationally, but when there is need; therefore, I do not see myself as lazy or preoccupied with cleaning, I see myself as normal. Sometimes I get my books all over my bed and papers over my desk, but I am using them to remind myself what I have read and what to do. A lazy person will not go to school and will not write papers after the other. In my take, I think everyone is in most cases in between the two extremes, because it sounds illogical that a neat person will send his/her kids to school so that they do not dirty the house, additionally everyone likes saving memories and pictures and according to Britt neat people do not save them.
