code switching Academic Essay

In class on Thursday, September 22* we talked about code switching and about the multiple versions of your identity that exist because of the various roles you play in your life (son or daughter, brother or sister, student, worker, friend, team or club member, roommate, spiritual congregation member, volunteer, etc.). For each of these identities/roles you probably adopt or put on a different set of behaviors and signifiers of your identity. These include (but are not limited to) patterns of speech, mannerisms, attitudes, clothing, hairstyles, cosmetics, accessories, and the items with which you decorate your home, workspace, car, etc.Your assignment is to design your ideal tattoo: An image that either encompasses all of your different identities or represents your TRUE identity, independent of your various roles.1. Draw or sketch your ideal tattoo. You can draw by hand on paper or use software to digitally create the image. You will not be graded on your drawing ability! Rather, your grade will depend on how thoughtfully you approach this assignment and how thoroughly you respond to the questions below. You are a unique and complex individual, so your tattoo will probably be detaileddont be afraid to create a complex image just because you think youre not good at drawing (sketches are, by definition, sketchy!).2. Photograph or scan the drawing and insert the image in a word processing document.3. Below the image, write a minimum of two paragraphs addressing the following questions: a. Where on your body would this tattoo be located? b. Would you always allow this tattoo to be visible, or would you hide or cover it in some situations? When and wherein which of your roles/regular activitieswould you hide it? Are there certain people or groups who would never see it? c. If you actually had this image tattooed on your body, would the purpose be to communicate your identity to other people, to reinforce to yourself who you really are, or to accomplish something else (explain)? d. What does the tattoo mean? Decode the image for your reader. Explain the significance of each of the codes or signs contained in the image. e. Save the file as a .pdf or .doc and upload it to the Journal 4 assignment folder on D2L. *If you missed class on September 22, watch this video to learn about code switching and identity so you can complete this assignment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=js8E6C3ZnJ0
