Any topic (writer’s choice)

focus on how the odyssey is still relevant with today’s culture. compare and contrast views from today and how things were viewed during the odyssey.
In this research project I am focusing on The Odyssey and how Odysseus adventures have taught us numerous things about Greek culture then compare these stories with our modern customs. Please explain how this myth (the odyssey) made an impact on many different cultures and how we can learn and compare the hardships/adventures to modern day society.  rubric is below

The research project is designed to carry you beyond the assigned readings, into an area of mythology that will be an extension of the main course work. You have chosen topics, had them approved, researched for strong potential sources, and are now seeking to write an essay that successfully makes connections with your topic and some of the intellectual work that we have done in class and furthers your understanding of an aspect of mythology. You will complete an essay of 1800-2000 words typed and double spaced which is due in Week 16 with a draft workshop in Week 15.

Your paper should be a well-researched academic argument that enters into conversation with the sources you have found, and uses them to synthesize and report evidence and examples that introduce your myth and area of interest (Ex: Gilgamesh and the culture that created it/how they responded to it). Your thesis needs to be 1. informative 2. focused, limited/specific, and 3. worthwhile, insightful, and relevant. For some guidance on common thesis mistakes, read this thesis handout. Your evidence should come from at least 6 different credible, scholarly sources, and claims should be warranted with backing and qualified as necessary. Sources from the open web (aka regular Google searches) are not considered scholarly and wont be accepted as your sources for this paper. If you use sources from the open web in place of the 6 scholarly sources required, your paper will not earn a passing score. Reference sources, books, and scholarly articles from academic journals are considered academic. There is a library research guide that may help you if you are not sure how to evaluate/find academic sources.

Make sure that you have a specific focus (an essential question like How did the culture of Babylon shape Gilgamesh and how did Gilgamesh shape the culture?) and that your resources are reliable and academic. Also, your essay must relate to the ideas and goals of our course (see syllabus) and must connect to some of the ideas we have been discussing relative to our core readings (cultural, anthropological, critical, artistic, or geographic significance of myths). Organization and style of presentation will be key considerations in the grading of this essay or multimedia presentation. A significant, controlling idea should be evident throughout and the writing should be clear with obvious transitions and linkage between sections. Your audience will be interested peers, who will need to be led through your essay thoughtfully and carefully. Originality of analysis will also be highly valued. Do not merely summarize and condense other sources. Do try to tie your essay into what we have already learned in the course.
