Skateboards and other forms of coasting transportation on campus

The Cal State University, Los Angeles Police Department recently circulated the following email to the campus community to help stimulate discussion on the topic of skateboards and other forms of coasting transportation on campus:
Over the course of the past year, more and more students have brought skateboards, scooters and other coasting devices to campus. Admittedly our campus is large but these devices are currently illegal according to campus regulations, supported by the California Vehicle Code. While university police officers stop and advise or cite skateboarders each day, without wider cooperation by our students, faculty and staff, it is difficult to contact each violator.

The President’s Cabinet has called on a working group to make recommendations related to the use of these devices on campus. In order to garner additional views, a decision was made to seek written input from the campus community.

At the end of the above message, the police department posed the following question:
1. Is the current campus regulation prohibiting these devices on the campus adequate and appropriate?
2. What is your position on this issue?
3. Do you think that Cal State LA’s campus is an appropriate place for students to ride skateboards, as well as other coasting devices?
4. Or do you believe that the campus regulation is fair?

Assuming that you have decided to write to the President’s Cabinet, make a case for what you think about this issue, employing examples and observations from your experience, as well as those of others you know.
