Treaty of Westphalia

This essay aims at discussing the treaty of Westphalia and the major events that took place before the treaty. The paper will also look at the events that happened between the years of 1600s and 1648. Finally, the paper will look at the effect on the treaty in terms of restoration of peace.

Before the treaty, several events took place that culminated to the treaty. For example, in the year of 1917, Ferdinand of Styria was elected as king of the Bohemia. Defenestration of Prague event happened because of the fact that Ferdinand was a supporter of the Catholics. This is why Calvinists revolted in 1918 starting with this event that saw two Catholics suffer minor injuries. The other event was the Battle of the White, in which Bohemia was invaded by troops from the Holy Roman Empire (Morgenthau 6). Due to this invasion, Fredrick had to fly to Holland for exile. 1629 saw the treaty of Lubeck after Catholics gained victory. In the year 1632, the Protestants, having been joined by the Swedish won against the Catholics. A series of battles from then led to the treaty of Prague in the year 1635. This however was broken, contributed by a direct entry of French to the war. It ended when Cardinal Richelieu died in the year 1642. Peace negotiations were started. These peace negotiations went on for years and culminated in 1648 with the signing of an agreement, with many resolutions, with the name of the Treaty of Westphalia. Although some wars were fought after the treaty, this treaty had a great impact of restoring peace between the rival groups of the Catholics and the Protestants.
