Assignment

After watching the film Thank You For Smoking and discussing it in DB13, write an official rhetorical analysis of the film. Please do not simply include what you posted for the DB. Use that as a starting point, but try to expand upon the analysis by considering points your classmates raised that made you think more deeply about the film.

Plagiarism Warning: While it is fine for the purposes of this assignment to use ideas suggested to you by your fellow classmates, do not copy anything written by another person into your journal. This is always considered plagiarism.

As you write your analysis, be sure to do all of the following:

To begin, write a brief summary of the film (a few sentences in length is all that is necessary) for the uninformed reader (the person who has never seen the film) using the summary writing guidelines discussed in the Summary PowerPoint (from Wednesday).
As part of the opening, be sure to identify the main claim (purpose) of the film (focus on what it is saying about tobacco or argument) and the intended audience.
The summary should be followed by a rhetorical analysis (1-2 pages, about 300-600 words). Overall, the majority of the writing in Journal 8 should be analysis, not summary. See Ch. 6 for more information on analysis, what to do and what not to do, especially pgs. 97-106 & 118-119.
For the body of the journal, discuss the use of appeals (logic, character, emotion, value, and/or need).
To support this discussion include quotes and/or examples from the film that represent the appeals. Explain why each appeal is or is not effective.
You don’t have to discuss all five appeals, but do try to cover the main three Aristotelian appeals (logic, character, and emotion) at least.
Bonus points if you can correctly identify a logical fallacy that occurs in the film.
